Our family business Baby Barn Discounts first opened in 1992 as a very humble shop selling new and used baby goods. On 1 July 1995 it was taken over by Sandy and Paul Scott who found the store while looking for a stroller for their 6 months old daughter Sinead.
After 21 years in the Commonwealth Bank Paul was made redundant and wife Sandy was no longer a practicing Physiotherapist in Australia, it was time for a change. Seeing a small ad in the business for sale section of the Daily News the couple decided to try their luck in this industry.
With no experience in the baby retail world Debbie gave the novices 3 months intensive training on all aspects of the operation and stayed to work with them for the next 2 years. With rent little capital to start with Sandy and Paul worked hard to build the business selling used furniture and equipment and cleaned used baby clothing in one section of the building. The presentable used clothing was frequently accessed by The Department & Community Services to assist their clients and also those of other organisations.
In the other sections a small amount of new goods were displayed and sold and the range was constantly expanded and improved. The hire of capsules, car seats and equipment was improved and updated and this continues today. An integral part of the Baby Barn Story since 1992 is its role as the Tweed and Gold Coast's only RTA (Now RMS) Authorised fitting station.
The business was growing stronger with their best efforts and passion as Sandy and Paul tried to learn how to grow with their second child Patrick's Autism and its challenges and uncertainties.
In the 1990's many vehicles needed modifications to accept child restraints such as Child Restraint Anchor Bars in early station wagons with no fitting points. Dual Cab Devices are still a common item installed with certification but the most important service was and remains fitting by trained experts of child restraints for your most vulnerable, precious passengers with RMS certificate issued. In 1998 it was decided to cease the trading of used furniture as demand had diminished and all of the clean used clothing was packed into over 40 boxes and donated to a church which sent these useful clothes to Africa for those in need. The second hand room evolved to become a charming nursery furniture and display room.
In 2000 a deposit was made on the business premises which was evnetually paid off. Any change could now be made without reference to a landlord. This enabled them to greatly improve the displays, storage and range of stock while reducing overheads from rising rent. Solar energy was embraced in 2010 when the business was enhanced with a 10 Kilo Solar Power System to reduce the operations carbon footprint. They system produces more power than the business uses which further reduces costs.
In 2011 work began on a website. At first website development and most maintenance was assigned to outside firms but as the technology evolved and the need to respond faster grew IT & Social Media expertise was saught and is now handled and grown in-house by a talented younger generation. Frankly we find it both challenging and enjoyable.
