What Mattress is best for my baby

Would you like to discover an easy way to measure a mattress for your cot?

What sort of mattress should it be & what size is it? Here at The Baby Barn, these are everyday questions. Having sold Boori Cots for 25 odd years, here's what we say

Baby Barn Discounts 27+ Years Experience

First, a brief look into Boori History

Boori Cots was established in Australia in 1993 and have a very well earned reputation for quality. Under the direction of Justin Chui, the brand has gone from strength to strength not just here but overseas as well.

Obviously, with such well-made cots, it’s no wonder that many of them have survived when others have made the journey to the dump. Mattresses of course do not have such a lifespan. No matter how clean a mattress is kept skin flakes are discarded and make a home for mites and such. Mattresses stain and they just don’t age well. It is always a good idea to give a baby a new fresh mattress even if the cot is second hand. It’s just the right thing to do.

How have mattress sizes changed?

From 1993 till 2005 Boori Mattress sizes were 131 x 75 centimetres. From 2005 till 2012 the size was increased to 132 x 77 centimetres which allowed for a bigger toddler bed configuration. Also at this time, a smaller cheaper line was marketed till 2012 under the King Parrot label. This mattress was 131 x 68 centimetres.

In 2013 production was moved to a purpose-built facility in China. From this time till present mattresses have been 132 x 70 centimetres. The King Parrot range name was changed to Boori Urbane. These mattresses were also 132 x 70. If you’re confused with this, let’s simplify.

How to find the correct mattress size?

To find the mattress size required for your cot look on BOTH SIDES of the cot base. You may find a sticker on the base slats with a batch number and a mattress size recommended. You may also find it stencilled onto a slat. If so, problem solved. If not here’s what you do. Make up the cot. Measure the inside from rail to rail above the base in the space the mattress will be. Measure twice and record that size. Do not measure base size as there is always a gap and it will be the WRONG SIZE and too narrow.

The suitability sticker on the base of your Boori cot bed will inform you of the correct mattress size required. Please locate the warning label on the cot's baseboard; this should state a recommended mattress size. Now that you know your mattress size give a thought to mattress protectors and sheets. You should get away with standard size sheets and mattress protectors with the current size 132 x 70 mattress but older 131 x 75 and 132 x 77 will require larger sizes.
